Parker about Château Grand Puy Lacoste 1990
The 1990 Grand Puy Lacoste is a wine that I had not tasted for a number of years. For a long time it was stubborn and tannic, uncommon attributes in what was such a comely vintage. Now at 26 years of age, this bottle served by Xavier Borie suggests that finally the 1990 has come round. Deep in colour, it has a gorgeous bouquet of black fruit, potpourri, graphite and melted tar. There is warmth here, but it does not impede upon the articulation of its origins in Pauillac. The palate has clearly melted in recent years, and maintains superb balance and weight. Sure, as Robert Parker himself remarked, it is evolving at a glacial pace—slower than the 1998 tasted alongside. That means its pleasure is going to be prolonged over many, many years. Tasted July 2016.

Château Grand Puy Lacoste 1990

The 1990 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a magnificent example of classic Pauillac and demonstrates how impressively this wine can age over time. Its color is a deep, still-luminous ruby red with hints of garnet. The nose immediately opens with intense aromas: ripe blackcurrants, cassis, and a subtle smoky note of cedarwood, along with earthy, almost leathery tones that reflect the maturity of this vintage, and a hint of violet that brings floral freshness to the blend.
On the palate, this Grand-Puy-Lacoste is full-bodied yet elegant. The tannin structure is beautifully integrated, giving the wine remarkable depth without ever making it seem too heavy. The mineral freshness of the Pauillac terroir blends harmoniously with the fruity aromas of black cherries and plums. The texture is silky, almost creamy, with a light spiciness that blends with hints of vanilla and caramel from the barrel aging. The fruit remains present without being overly sweet, which makes the wine so balanced and complex.
