Palatinate region
The Palatinate looks back on a long tradition as a wine-growing region. Already in the Middle Ages it was considered the "wine cellar of the Holy Roman Empire". With a cultivation area of around 23,500 hectares, it is the second largest wine-growing region in Germany. The more than 80 km long wine-growing region nestles between the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine plain and is crossed by the German Wine Route. Incidentally, the Wine Route, established in 1935, is the oldest wine tourism route in the world. The main varieties grown in the region are Riesling and Dornfelder.
