The Bordeaux region is one of the most famous wine-growing regions in France. Located in Saint-Julien, Château Ducru Beaucaillou borders the Gironde River. With its wines of the "Deuxième Grand Cru Classé" quality class, the winery has been in the second highest level of the important classification since 1855 and viticulture has been successfully practiced around the château for more than 300 years.

300 years of eventful history, shaped by family tradition

At the beginning of the history of the winery is the marriage of the heiress of the vineyard, Marie Dejean, with the squire of King Jacques de Bergeron on May 30, 1720. Only through this connection did the success story take its course and the rise of the winery began. In 1797, the château's namesake, Bertrand Ducru, took over and his success continues to this day.

On September 29, 2020, Château Ducru Beaucaillou celebrates its 300th birthday. On this day, historical scenes were re-enacted as living works of art in homage to the 18th century. A special gesture of the owners was the memory of famous women who significantly shaped the history of the château. With 300 candles for each year and a big fireworks display in the evening, this holiday for history ended.

The winery and its owners

The elegant building of the Château Ducru Beaucaillou towers over the 105-hectare estate. It is a Directoire style building, construction of which began in the 1820s. Its neoclassical construction fits harmoniously into the environment of vines, water and vineyards and makes many visitors dream.

The vines for viticulture are located on an area of 52 hectares. Wine of the highest quality has been grown here with heart and passion for many generations, because the winegrowers have committed themselves to tradition with heart and soul. Strict selection and extreme care have been the key to the best quality on this top-class winery for centuries.

Since 2003, the Château Ducru Beaucaillou has belonged to the operating company Jean-Eugène Borie SA under the direction of Bruno-Eugène Borie as director. He is one of the few winery owners in France who lives in his château himself.

Which soils and grape varieties does the château grow in?

With a soil consisting of gravel, marl and pebbles, the winegrowers in the area have the best conditions for top-class winegrowing. This gives the wines from Saint-Julian their extraordinary elegance: the winery produces fine wines of the highest quality, characterized by grace, silk and lace.

65 percent of the cultivated grape varieties represent the Cabernet Sauvignon. Another 25 percent are native Merlot grapes and 5 percent each of the vines deliver Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot wines. The key to success is a tradition that can look back on a long history: conservative cultivation methods in harmony with nature ensure top-class products.

Quality is the top priority when it comes to viticulture at the château. A maximum of 10,000 vines are grown on one hectare, the vines are on average 40 years old and deliver a yield of 35 to 45 hl per hectare of cultivation area.
