The winery has been one of the absolute world leaders in the port wine business for many decades. The estate looks back on more than 200 years of history and is now part of the wine empire of the Symington family, one of the world's largest producers of port. A golden location

The former Graham family estate is just a forty minute drive from Porto in the famous Douro Valley. The valley of the river Douro (“golden” in English) has always lived up to its name. It has been a protected region of origin since 1756 and is therefore one of the oldest internationally classified wine-growing regions. The "Alto Douro" (High Douro) is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular and beautiful wine regions in Europe and was deservedly included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.

Graham's wine comes predominantly from the vineyards of Quinta Dos Malvedos, Quinta do Tua and Quinta das Lages in the municipality of Rio Torto. Two other estates, Quinta da Vila Velha and Quinta do Vale de Malhadas, also supply grapes for the estate's port wine production. All five quintas, the Portuguese word for farm or estate, are among the most exclusive and best wine estates in the upper Douro Valley. The production sites of the port wine house are on Quinta Dos Malvedos and in Villa Nova de Gaia. Port wine cellars are also located here, which visitors can visit.

A long tradition of port wine production

The winery looks back on a long history that began with a coincidence. Brothers William and John Graham founded a textile trading company in north-west Portugal in the early 19th century. In 1820 they accepted 27 casks of port as payment for a debt. They shipped the barrels to Glasgow in Scotland, where the new type of wine from Portugal was very popular. The lively demand for port wine in Great Britain was the initial spark for the family to found their own winery.
Incidentally, the oldest vintage of Graham's Port still available today dates from 1882 and is aptly named “Ne Oublie” (“don't forget”). Only three barrels of this particularly high-quality vintage still exist today, and the bottles are of course sold to port wine lovers all over the world at high prices.

The winery has been owned by the Symington family since 1970, who also have a long tradition of winemaking in Portugal and have been closely linked to the founding family for many decades. Along with the other port brands owned by the Symington family, Graham's is the only remaining British port house to be independently owned by a single family.

In recent years, the Symington family has invested heavily in the vineyards in the Douro region. She has also installed some of the world's most modern Port production facilities in the centuries-old Quinta Dos Malvedos winery. Graham's Port quality has never been better. In 2015, the port wine house was consequently appointed royal purveyor to Queen Elizabeth II.

Top products for port wine lovers

Port lovers will definitely find their personal favorite in Graham's range. Graham's flagship port is the Six Grapes Reserve Port. The full-bodied, powerful, silky and fruity taste of the wine makes it one of the most popular port wines in the world. In the past, in a time of high illiteracy rates, the legendary winery marked the best casks in the cellar with a six grape symbol (Six Grapes). To this day, the symbol stands for the best wines of the house.

Graham's LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) wine is also very popular. It matures in barrels for four years and impresses with its consistently good quality. The Vintage Port is also one of the best port wines in the world. In particular, wines from the 1948, 1963 and 1985 vintages have developed into top wines.
