Leader from Bordeaux

Chateau La Fleur-Pétrus is one of the most treasured wineries in the Pomerol region of France's world famous Bordeaux wine region. Its history as a top-class winery is relatively young. Since 1952, La Fleur-Pétrus has been owned by the trading house Jean-Pierre Moueix, which has specialized in the sale of exquisite Bordeaux quality wines for decades. The family business, founded in Libourne in 1937, became a renowned trading company for quality wines with a worldwide reputation and is now managed by Edouard Mouieux in the third generation. With a high level of expertise in the cultivation, development and marketing of top-class wines, the Jean-Pierre Moueix company developed the property in the immediate vicinity of the Lafleur and Pétrus wineries into a producer of red Bordeaux wines that are coveted worldwide.

In 1994, the chateau was expanded with a plot of old vines, which the trading company Moueix bought from the neighboring chateau Le Gay. This led to an increase in the quality of the cuvées pressed in the winery by experienced winemakers. In order to satisfy true connoisseurs of excellent Bordeaux wines all over the world, the owner of the chateau is very keen to constantly develop and improve the range and quality management.

Merlot is the classic Bordeaux grape variety

The Chateau La Fleur-Pétrus currently covers a total area under cultivation of 18.7 hectares, making it one of the larger wineries in Pomerol. The estate, on which grapes of the highest quality thrive, is located on a plateau in north-eastern Pomerol, which is characterized by soils of deep primeval gravel, white and loamy soils. The proportion of minerals in the clay layer in the soil and the acidity of the gravel, together with the respective climatic influences, have a formative effect on the taste of the wines of a vintage. More than 91% of the vineyards are planted with Merlot. Cabernet Franc thrives on 6% of the area and Petit Verdot on 3%.

Merlot is the classic grape variety in the Bordeaux wine region. It is blended with other grape varieties of the same rank in the local wineries to create an exquisite cuvée. Merlot wines from Chateau La Fleur-Pétrus with a velvety soft character and low acidity harmonize perfectly with the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grape varieties. Its soft tannins bring taste nuances of blackberries and blueberries to the cuvée. Cabernet Franc, the lighter variant of Cabernet Sauvignon, gives it the slightly fruity aroma of raspberries and violets. Petit Verdot is a classic red grape variety in Bordeaux, which only goes into the cuvée in small quantities because of its high acidity.

Special cultivation of the wines

The wines of the Chateau La Fleur-Pétrus have a gentle aroma. The taste of the quality wines is influenced on the one hand by the condition of the soil and the weather conditions, and on the other hand by the way they are aged.
The noble red wines mature in wooden barrels, which underlines and perfects their noble character. A special feature of the estate is that the winemakers exchange a third of the wooden barrels in each vintage, in which the wines are aged for 20 months. This ensures a constant aromatic intensity of the cuvées made from the three grape varieties Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In addition, the experienced winemakers pay great attention to the selection of the grape varieties. Their quality can vary in the individual vintages due to external influences, which requires great care when putting together the cuvée.

Since unusual weather conditions can have a dramatic effect on the ripeness and taste of the grapes, the owner of the wine processing company does everything in his power to skilfully compensate for climatic irregularities. Especially in view of warmer winters, which cause the vines to flower earlier, it may be necessary to artificially increase the ambient temperature around the vines at times so that the frosts that set in in spring do not affect them. Daily observation of the climatic conditions and the utmost care in the cultivation and harvesting of the grapes produce wines with a unique character.
