Region of Sicily
The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea has been a traditional wine-growing region for thousands of years. Winegrowing in Sicily was documented as early as the 7th century BC. With a cultivation area of around 100,000 hectares, Sicily is still one of the largest cultivation areas in Italy. Almost two thirds of the vineyards are covered with white grapes. However, the island's most famous grape is the red Nero d'Avola, which is grown almost everywhere.
