The Tejo wine region is located north-east of Lisbon and stretches along both banks of the river of the same name. Because of the fertile alluvial soils, the region is called "the garden of Portugal". The combination of continental climate with humid Atlantic influences allows a wide range of grape varieties to grow in the region. The white wines are usually also made from the Arinto, Fernão Pires and Talia varieties. The Castelao Frances variety dominates the red wines.
