Middle Rhine region
The Middle Rhine growing region extends on both sides of the Rhine from Bonn to Bingen. With a cultivation area of almost 500 hectares, it is the second smallest cultivation area in Germany. Due to their steeply terraced locations, the vineyards in this region are very difficult to cultivate, which is why the area under vines has shrunk significantly in recent decades. With a share of around two thirds, Riesling is the dominant grape variety on the Rhine.
