Château Montelena
Château Montelena is located in the heart of Napa Valley, one of the world's most famous wine regions. The winery has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Founded in 1882 by Alfred L. Tubbs, it was named after its then-owner, who named it after the French word "château."
Château Montelena's vineyards cover approximately 45 hectares and are renowned for their excellent locations in Napa Valley. The region's soils, climate, and topography create ideal conditions for growing grapes. Château Montelena's terroir contributes significantly to the quality and uniqueness of its wines.
Château Montelena gained particular notoriety through the so-called "Judgment of Paris" in 1976. At this wine tasting in Paris, Californian wines, including Château Montelena's Chardonnay, were judged against French wines in a blind tasting. The surprising result was that the Californian wines outperformed the French wines in both the white and red wine categories. This event helped cement the reputation of Californian wines worldwide.
The winery places great emphasis on artisanal winemaking and sustainability. Wines are carefully selected to ensure the highest quality, and traditional winemaking methods are respected.
