Region of Beaujolais
The Beaujolais wine-growing region north of Lyon forms the southern part of Burgundy geographically, but is a separate wine-growing region due to the significantly different characteristics of its wines. The red wine of the same name, which is so popular and famous not only in France, is made from the Gamay grape variety. Grapes are now cultivated on around 23,000 hectares in the Beaujolais. Almost 40 communities in the region have the right to expand the wine in the Appellation d'Originie Controlée "Beaujolais-Villages".
