Chianti Classico Riserva 1997

The 1997 Chianti Classico Riserva from Villa Cafaggio is an outstanding example of a mature Chianti from an excellent vintage. 1997 was an exceptionally warm year in Tuscany with optimal conditions, resulting in powerful, concentrated, and long-lasting wines.
This wine, made from 100% Sangiovese , reveals a fascinating depth and elegance after more than 25 years of ageing. Ripe cherries, prunes, and dried rose petals unfold on the nose , complemented by earthy notes, tobacco, leather, and a hint of sweet spices such as cinnamon and cloves. On the palate, it impresses with a silky texture, soft yet present tannins, and a well-preserved acidity that lends it freshness. Notes of dried herbs, black tea, and undergrowth round out the complex aromatic interplay. The finish is long and elegant with subtle hints of dark chocolate and roasted nuts.
This aged Chianti Classico Riserva is a perfect example of how well Sangiovese can age. It should ideally be served at 16–18°C and decanted for at least an hour to develop its full potential. It pairs perfectly with aged Pecorino, game dishes, or a classic Bistecca alla Fiorentina.
