Parker about Sperss Barolo 2017
Following so quickly after the celestial 2016 vintage, this Gaja 2017 Barolo Sperss shows muscle and brawn; however, the Conteisa holds its own in terms of aromatic complexity. With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, that added concentration and determination are expected, especially in a hot and dry vintage such as 2017. Here you get dark cherry fruit with cassis and wild plum. There are also floral aromas that veer toward red roses more than they do violets or blue flowers. And, of course, you get some of those iron-rich or mineral notes of rusty nail or iron that are often associated with Sperss.

Sperss Barolo 2017

Angelo Gaja Barolo Sperss
Giovanni Gaja, Angelo Gaja's father, dreamed of producing a top-quality Barolo alongside Barbaresco. In 1988, Angelo Gaja fulfilled the family dream and purchased a vineyard in the Marenca-Rivette vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba. The now legendary Barolo Sperss was born.
With its masculine and powerful structure, the Sperss is an archetype of a powerful, long-lasting Barolo, which reaches monumental greatness after a long cellar maturation.

Information about the winemaker:
The family winery is now one of the best known in Italy and can look back on a centuries-old history. The success story of owner Angelo Gaja began in the 17th century when the family emigrated from Spain to Italy. In 1859, a member of the family, a grape producer in Barbaresco, laid the foundation for the current company by opening a tavern, which also served their own wines. The wines were already so popular at the end of the 19th century that they were supplied to the Italian army, among others. Already in the second generation of the family, an unusually high value was placed on quality, with the aim of retaining a predominantly upscale clientele.
