Parker about Garrafeira Port 1987
The 1987 Porto Garrafeira was bottled the same day as the 1983 (in 2018), but this wine had a lot shorter time in barrel. It was put in glass demijohn in 1991 (even before the 1983) and has the reductive glass character that, to me, describes this category. It has the best of both worlds, the Ruby and the Tawny worlds. It has the cherries in liqueur, the flowers, some nuttiness, spice, smoke and moderate volatility. My experience with this style is that the wines improve in bottle for a very long time, and this is definitely still too young and undeveloped; it would be a shame to open a bottle any time soon. It has power and elegance. An amazing wine, definitely world-class and unique, it has the floral, Burgundian character and purity I expect from this wine. They filled some 3,200 bottles. But they still have more demijohns to make a second or third bottling in the future.

Garrafeira Port 1987

Niepoort's 1987 Garrafeira Port is a remarkable wine, distinguished by its unique aging and complexity. Garrafeira Ports are distinguished by a special aging method, in which the wine is first aged in wooden barrels and then in bottles. This gives the wine special characteristics that set it apart from other port wines.
Typically, a Garrafeira Port from this vintage displays a deep, dark, luminous color that often takes on a reddish-brown hue over time. The nose unfolds with a bouquet of dried fruits, nuts, chocolate, and spices, often complemented by subtle notes of caramel and tobacco. These aromas blend to create a complex and intriguing olfactory experience.
On the palate, the wine usually presents a rich, velvety texture and balanced acidity. The flavor palette can include aromas of dried fruit, spices, and sometimes toasted wood, all harmoniously interwoven. The finish is often long and elegant, underscoring the wine's excellent quality and aging.
Niepoort's 1987 Garrafeira Port is a superb example of the winery's craftsmanship and an excellent choice for special occasions. It is a treasure for collectors and lovers of fine port wines, offering years of enjoyment if carefully stored.

Information about the winemaker:
The history of the traditional company begins almost 200 years ago, when Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, a young, ambitious Dutchman from near Amsterdam, laid the foundation for the wine company. After emigrating to Portugal and gaining some experience in the wine trade, he founded today's winery in 1842. According to the region, he focused on port wines.
