Parker about Colheita Port 2003
The older Colheita in the market now is the 2003 Colheita Tawny Port, which still has some red tints and signs of youth. This was bottled in 2023 after 20 years in barrels. 2003 was a very, very warm year, and they kept the wine for a very long time because they never felt the wine was ready; so, it was bottled later and with more complexity. But again, it still feels younger than the 20 year old, and it is creamy, with notes of candied orange peel. Time in bottle should continue the refinement and bring more elegance to the wine, even though you cannot tell it comes from a very warm year.

Colheita Port 2003

Niepoort's 2003 Colheita Port is an excellent representative of this special port wine category. Colheita Ports are single-vintage ports that are aged in oak barrels after the harvest. They differ from Vintage Ports in that they continue to age in barrels rather than bottles, giving them their own complexity and characteristics.
Niepoort's 2003 Colheita Port typically presents itself in a deep ruby red color, which can develop a slight brownish hue over time. The nose unfolds with a rich aroma spectrum characterized by dried fruits, caramel, and delicate spices. Often, nuances of chocolate, nuts, and occasionally light oak notes are also present.
On the palate, the 2003 Colheita Port is typically full-bodied and elegant. Aromas of dried fruit and caramel are accompanied by a smooth, velvety texture. The wine's complexity is evident in the fine, well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity, which make the finish long and smooth.
This port wine is perfect as the perfect finishing touch to a fine dinner or as a moment of indulgence on special occasions. The careful aging and high-quality grapes used make it a prized wine for connoisseurs and collectors.

Information about the winemaker:
The history of the traditional company begins almost 200 years ago, when Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, a young, ambitious Dutchman from near Amsterdam, laid the foundation for the wine company. After emigrating to Portugal and gaining some experience in the wine trade, he founded today's winery in 1842. According to the region, he focused on port wines.
