Parker about Vintage Port 1966
Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedar, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age.

Vintage Port 1966
Fonseca's 1966 Vintage Port is considered one of the most iconic and long-lasting ports of the 20th century. It represents an outstanding vintage known for its finesse, power, and exceptional aging potential. After more than five decades of maturation, this wine has achieved remarkable depth and complexity. In the glass, it displays a deep, almost mahogany color with brownish and reddish reflections that reflect its age.
The bouquet is intense and seductive, characterized by a fascinating interplay of dried fruits such as figs, raisins, and prunes, combined with notes of dark chocolate, walnuts, and mocha. Secondary aromas arising from the long aging clearly emerge: leather, tobacco, dried flowers, and a hint of cedar wood. In addition, subtle spice notes such as cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as hints of licorice and balsamic vinegar, are detectable.
On the palate, the Fonseca 1966 is extremely powerful yet elegant. The tannins are perfectly integrated after such long aging, giving the wine a velvety texture. The ripe fruit aromas, accompanied by spicy and earthy nuances, are still present, but beautifully interwoven with the notes that have developed over the years. A refreshing acidity gives the wine a lively freshness and contributes to balance. The finish is exceptionally long and complex, with lingering aromas of dried fruit, spices, and subtle wood notes.
This 1966 Vintage Port is a masterpiece that demonstrates how impressive and long-lasting a port wine can be. It has reached its perfect drinking maturity, but is also still age-worthy and will offer a fascinating experience for many years to come.
