Parker about Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vielles Vignes 1998
The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes actually showed better than the Reserve, which normally doesn't make sense. There are no oxidative issues with this wine. It has a dark plum/ruby color with no lightening at the edge, and exhibits sweet black raspberry, blackberry, charcoal and creosote notes, with some garrigue, pepper, and meat juices. Full-bodied, opulent.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vielles Vignes 1998

The 1998 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes from Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is a remarkable wine from the southern Rhône Valley. Produced by one of the region's most respected producers, this wine comes from old vines deeply rooted in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir. The 1998 vintage is considered exceptional, producing wines renowned for their power, elegance, and longevity.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep, intense ruby red, fading to garnet over time. The nose is complex and rich, with aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackberries, black cherries, and plums. These luscious fruit aromas are accompanied by notes of herbs de Provence, garrigue, black olives, and pepper, typical of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir. With increasing age, hints of leather, truffles, and earthy notes develop, further enhancing the wine's complexity.
On the palate, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 1998 is full-bodied, powerful, yet elegant. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated, while the acidity provides excellent balance. The ripe fruit flavors are intense and accompanied by spicy and mineral nuances that give the wine depth and structure. The texture is velvety and opulent, and the finish is long and impressive, with a lingering impression of spice, dark fruit, and a subtle earthy note.
