Parker about Château Palmer 1982

Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the magnum of 1982 Château Palmer is one of the best examples that I have tasted, even if it is no match for the 1983. It is a little curmudgeonly at first, perhaps slightly pinched, but it unfolds nicely and reveals quite mineral-rich, soy-tinged black fruit interlaced with graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin lending this backbone. It is missing some weight towards the finish, but as it opens in the glass, it reveals hidden facets such as tobacco and tertiary notes, allied with poise and finesse. Granted, it falls short of what could have been given the benevolent vintage and quality of its peers, however this magnum suggests that in larger formats might be worth seeking out. Tasted May 2015.

Produktbeschreibung

Château Palmer 1982

The 1982 Château Palmer is an iconic Bordeaux from Margaux, produced in one of the most celebrated vintages of the 20th century. The 1982 vintage is known for its exceptional maturity, concentration, and ability to age and evolve over decades. In this vintage, Château Palmer produced a wine that impressively combines elegance, depth, and complexity.

In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet red, retaining remarkable vibrancy despite its age. The bouquet is lush and seductive, with complex aromas dominated by ripe dark fruits such as blackberries, cassis, and plums. These fruit aromas are perfectly integrated into a layer of secondary and tertiary notes that have developed over the course of aging. These include aromas of cedarwood, tobacco, leather, and a subtle earthiness, accompanied by hints of dried herbs and a delicate spice.

On the palate, the Château Palmer 1982 is silky and full-bodied, with an exceptional balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins. The tannins are soft and perfectly integrated, giving the wine a smooth texture and harmonious structure. The ripe fruit aromas unfold in full splendor on the palate, supported by a mineral freshness and hints of chocolate and coffee, which add additional depth to the wine.

The finish is long, complex, and remarkably fine, with a lingering aftertaste of ripe fruit, spice, and an elegant oak note. Despite over four decades of aging, the Château Palmer 1982 is a wine that still displays impressive freshness and vitality, and has the potential to evolve even further.

This wine is ideal for special occasions, accompanied by fine dishes such as saddle of lamb, game, or even mature cheese. It unforgettably embodies the essence of the great 1982 vintage and the classic elegance of Château Palmer.
