Parker about Château Palmer Imperiale 1985

Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the 1985 Château Palmer was clearly a favorite among the participants in the tasting, although here I actually concur with Robert Parker - it's a pleasant Margaux, but not the most complex wine of the vintage. You get the feeling that it doesn't fire on all cylinders. It has an appealing bacon fact and savory bouquet - a little smudged, but full of charm. The palate is fleshy on the entry, perhaps here with a touch of brettanomyces, the acidity well judged with expressive Merlot defining the finish. It doesn't "take off" as the greatest 1985s are wont to do, yet you would contentedly polish off a bottle, seduced by its easy-going nature.

Produktbeschreibung

Château Palmer Imperiale 1985

The 1985 Château Palmer is an outstanding red wine from the Margaux region of Bordeaux, France. Château Palmer, one of the most respected wineries in Margaux and classified as a Troisième Cru Classé (Third Growth) in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855, produces this wine primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a smaller proportion of Petit Verdot.

The 1985 vintage benefited from a cool, wet spring followed by a long, warm, and dry summer, which allowed for slow, even ripening of the grapes and created ideal conditions for producing wines of great finesse and complexity. The 1985 Château Palmer displays a deep ruby red color that tends toward brick red with age. Its bouquet is rich and complex, with aromas of ripe red and black fruits such as cherries, plums, and currants, complemented by nuances of violet, cedarwood, tobacco, leather, and subtle spices.

On the palate, the wine is silky and elegant, with well-integrated tannins and a lively acidity that provides freshness. The finish is long and harmonious, with lingering notes of fruit and spice. Over time, the wine develops additional secondary and tertiary aromas such as truffles, forest floor, and dried herbs. The Château Palmer 1985 has excellent aging potential and can be stored for several decades. Many connoisseurs appreciate that this vintage remains at a high level even after more than 30 years.
