Parker about Château Rieussec 1988
Tasted in Sauternes with Charles Chevalier, the 1988 Rieussec is a vintage that Chevalier himself claimed to be his favorite. I can understand why. It has an unerringly youthful bouquet with vibrant citrus fruit, wild honey, mandarin and mineral scents, a bouquet that seems to have electricity flowing through it. The same can be said for the palate that is full of tension and vigor, almost clinical in terms of focus with alluring viscosity and wonderful length. This bowled me over with its charm and breeding. Hunt a bottle down and share with your best friends—this is a superlative Rieussec, one of the best produced. Tasted April 2016.

Château Rieussec 1988

The Château Rieussec 1988 is a Sauternes of impressive maturity and structure, evoking the classically elegant notes of this winery. Its color shimmers a deep golden yellow with a light amber hue, a testament to the years of bottle aging and the intense aromas of this vintage. The nose unfolds with a complex bouquet of dried apricots, candied citrus fruits, honey, and a delicate note of vanilla and almonds, accompanied by a hint of saffron and light smoke.
On the palate, the 1988 vintage presents a dense, silky texture and balanced sweetness, supported by lively acidity. Aromas of honey, dried fruit, and lightly caramelized almonds are rich and concentrated, leading to a wonderfully long finish characterized by subtle spice and gentle minerality.
This vintage is an excellent accompaniment to foie gras, mature cheeses, and sweet fruit-based desserts. With over three decades of bottle aging, Château Rieussec 1988 has fully developed its complexity and is ready to be enjoyed now, although it still has further potential for additional years of ageing.
