Parker about Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Old Vines Great Growth Magnum 2023

From vines planted in 1893 and raised on single poles, the 2023 Altenberg GG opens with a deep, pure and generous bouquet with very fine gray slate and very elegant yet also deep and intense fruit aromas intertwined with notes of fresh peanuts. Savory and saline on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich, incredibly vital, very dense and complex Riesling with power yet also finesse and elegance. The wine is darker toned than other Saar Rieslings, generously textured and, due to the steepness of the site, the proximity to the Saar and the old vines, really rich and powerful. All of which is uplifted by the mineral substance and the fine tannin structure of this long-distance runner. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.v

Suckling over Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Old Vines Great Growth Magnum 2023

The extremely fine aromas of white peaches and honeysuckle welcome you to a masterpiece of racy elegance. So concentrated, yet so delicate on the finely chiseled, barely medium-bodied palate. Super long and precise slatey finish that takes your breathe away. Drink or hold.

Produktbeschreibung

Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Old Vines Great Growth Magnum 2023

Van Volxem's Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Alte Reben Großes Gewächs 2023 is a prime example of the elegance and depth that the Mosel region can produce. The nose unfolds with a complex bouquet of ripe citrus fruits, white peach, and a hint of exotic mango, underscored by a mineral smokiness reminiscent of wet slate. Subtle herbal notes such as lemon balm and a hint of thyme add further nuance.

On the palate, the wine is taut yet smooth, carried by a precise, vibrant acidity that lends it an almost weightless elegance. The intense fruit aromas are reflected, complemented by a salty minerality that impressively expresses the terroir of the Kanzemer Altenberg. The long, harmonious finish is characterized by a subtle spiciness and an invigorating freshness that makes the wine appear youthful yet timeless.

This Riesling is a masterpiece of structure and balance, a wine that captivates with its vitality in youth and will gain depth and refinement with age. A great wine for great moments, perfectly combining Van Volxem's signature style and the uniqueness of his vineyard.

Weingut van Volxem is home to some of the oldest steep slopes in the history of viticulture.
