Parker about Wawener Goldberg Riesling Grand Cru 2023
From red slate and Muschelkalk soils in the underground, the 2023 Goldberg GG from Wawern is pure and savory on the refined and slatey bouquet that offers perfectly ripe and healthy fruit with aromas of orange, peach, mango and even some passion fruit notes. Full-bodied, rich and intense on the palate, this is a vital, finessed and very juicy Riesling. Fine tannins structure this powerful but also saline and finessed Riesling that develops a long, savory and intense finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

Suckling over Wawener Goldberg Riesling Grand Cru 2023
The fresh pineapple and wild herb aromas make this dry Saar riesling stand out. Ripe and compact, yet only medium-bodied. This has a lot of depth and drive. So much peachy fruit and stony freshness in the long, complete finish. Drink or hold.

Wawener Goldberg Riesling Grand Cru 2023

The Wawener Goldberg Riesling Großes Gewächs 2023 from Van Volxem presents itself as a fascinating ambassador of its historic steep slope. The nose is enchanted by intense aromas that combine ripe mirabelle plums, juicy pears, and an elegant lime freshness. Subtle hints of white blossoms and fresh herbs like lemon balm add additional depth to the bouquet, while the mineral note typical of the Goldberg evokes warm, sunlit slate soils.
On the palate, the wine presents impressive clarity and structure. A precise, lively acidity forms the backbone and provides dynamism, while the finely balanced fruit aromas are carried by a creamy texture. The saline minerality of the terroir shines through impressively, lending the wine an almost dance-like lightness. The finish is long and finely nuanced, characterized by a subtle spiciness and a hint of citrus freshness that lingers.
The Wawener Goldberg 2023 is a Riesling of exceptional finesse, perfectly reflecting the harmony of elegance and intensity. A wine that already delights and promises great aging potential—a gem for connoisseurs and lovers of the Saar region.
