Parker about Chateau Margaux 1999
The 1999 Chateau Margaux has been the standout First Growth since I first tasted the wine from barrel. Now reaching its plateau of maturity, it has an understated nose at first, armed with impressive minerality with a gorgeous graphite seam. The definition and precision here is top class. The palate is medium-bodied and smooth in texture, very harmonious and assured, surprisingly with some new oak still to be fully assimilated into the wine. The signature Margaux traits of crushed black cherries and violets comes through towards the finish, suggestions of raspberry reserve and desiccated orange peel enhancing the long finish. Perhaps I might temper my initial enthusiasm for the 1999 Château Margaux...but only slightly. It comes highly recommended.

Chateau Margaux 1999

On the nose, the Château Margaux 1999 unfolds a fascinating bouquet of black berries, particularly cassis and blackberries, accompanied by floral nuances such as violets and rose petals. Subtle spice notes such as cedarwood, tobacco, and a fine mineral note blend together, lending the wine additional complexity.
On the palate, the wine presents a silky texture and a perfect balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins. The dark fruit aromas continue, accompanied by notes of dark chocolate, licorice, and light smoky nuances. The tannins are present, yet smooth and well-integrated.
The 1999 Château Margaux impresses with its impressive length and lingering finish. The structure and fine tannins suggest great aging potential, and the wine is expected to continue to gain complexity over the years.
This wine pairs perfectly with sophisticated dishes such as roast beef, lamb, or game. It can also be enjoyed on its own to fully appreciate the wine's subtle nuances and finesse.
