Parker about Château Monbousquet 2003
This was an amazing performance for Monbousquet. The 2003 exhibits plenty of fat and succulence along with a full-bodied, sexy mouthfeel, and lots of black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, baking spices and roasted herbs. Fully mature yet in no danger of falling apart or in decline, the color remains a healthy plum/garnet to the rim. This full throttle 2003 was one of the great buys of the vintage when it was first released, and continues to prove that great winemaking and viticultural management from less heralded terroirs can result in wines well-above their pedigree.

Château Monbousquet 2003

The 2003 Château Monbousquet is a powerful and voluptuous Bordeaux from Saint-Émilion, reflecting the hot and dry weather of this exceptional vintage. 2003 produced wines rich in fruit and alcohol, which is evident in the intensity and opulence of this wine.
The wine presents a deep, almost impenetrable ruby red, which indicates its youth and concentration. The bouquet unfolds with luscious aromas of ripe black cherries, blackberries, and dark plums, accompanied by notes of licorice, vanilla, and chocolate. The heat of the vintage also brings exotic hints of dried figs and raisins, adding an additional dimension to the wine. Oak aging brings subtle nuances of cedar, smoke, and a hint of spice, rounding out the aromatic profile.
On the palate, the Château Monbousquet 2003 is full-bodied and dense, with an opulent, almost velvety texture. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated, yet give the wine a solid structure that balances it and adds depth. The fruit is lush and concentrated, yet harmonious, supported by a pleasant acidity that provides freshness. Notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and a hint of minerality complement the taste experience and lend the wine additional complexity.
The finish is long and intense, with a lingering aftertaste of ripe dark fruits, spices, and a light oak note. The Château Monbousquet 2003 is wonderfully accessible now, but also shows the potential to evolve and gain additional complexity over the coming years.
This wine is an ideal accompaniment to hearty meat dishes such as roast beef, lamb, or game, as well as mature cheeses. It offers an intense and rich drinking experience that perfectly captures the richness and warmth of the 2003 vintage.
