Parker about Château Pontet-Canet 2005

Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, the 2005 Château Pontet-Canet has long been one of the stars of the vintage and this might well be the best of over a dozen showings of this wine. However, do not expect ostentation on the nose. This is 2005 and like many wines of this vintage, even with considerable decanting, it remained broody and introspective on the nose, as if it is checking you out and seeing if you are worthy. Once you have been accepted, then it swings the doors open to reveal gorgeous scents of blackberry, briary and cassis fruit, perhaps a little more sous-bois than I have noticed compared to previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied, but dense and structured—certainly a more masculine Pontet-Canet built for long-term aging. Yet it retains marvelous freshness and vitality all the way through to the pencil-lead, quite saline finish. I suspect that the 2009 Pontet-Canet is more approachable than the 2005, so heeding Robert Parker's sage advice, afford this up to ten years in your cellar and then reap the rewards of patience. Tasted February 2016.

The 2005 Château Pontet-Canet is a remarkable wine from a vintage considered one of the best of the decade in Bordeaux. The 2005 vintage is prized for its exceptional quality and impressive balance, and this wine from Pontet-Canet impressively showcases the vintage's strength and elegance.

In the glass, the 2005 vintage displays a deep, almost impenetrable ruby red with purple highlights, indicating its youth and intensity. The bouquet is opulent and complex, with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, and cherries, accompanied by notes of cedarwood, tobacco, and fine spices such as pepper and vanilla. Subtle nuances of leather, truffles, and toasted wood complement the bouquet, lending the wine additional depth and complexity.

On the palate, the Château Pontet-Canet 2005 presents itself with impressive structure and a powerful yet elegant tannin framework. The fruit is intense and concentrated, supported by a lively acidity that lends the wine freshness and balance. The aromas of dark berries and spices are superbly integrated and are complemented by subtle nuances of chocolate, toasted wood, and a light mineral note that lends the wine additional dimension.

The finish is long and persistent, with a harmonious blend of ripe fruit, spices, and a subtle mineral note that leaves the wine smooth and complex. The 2005 is already a pleasure to drink, displaying the characteristic depth and opulence of this outstanding vintage, but also has the potential for further aging to reveal even more nuances.

This wine pairs perfectly with hearty dishes such as beef fillet, lamb, or game, as well as with mature cheeses.
