Parker about Château Pontet-Canet 2004

Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, it seems clear that the 2004 Château Pontet-Canet is predestined to always fall under the shadow of the 2005. Don't overlook this gem. The bouquet delivers pure blackberry, pencil lead and tobacco notes that are more generous than the 2005 at the moment—open for business, you might say. There is an element of dried herbs here, a hint of black tar. The palate is medium-bodied and quite sturdy in the mouth, the tannins perhaps "abrasive" when juxtaposed against the 2005, however they are couched in unexpectedly intense earthy black fruit that frame a tannic finish. If you hanker for a sumptuous Pontet-Canet, then opt for 2003 or 2009, but if your preference is for a more "classic" Pauillac, then 2004 Pontet-Canet fits the bill. Undoubtedly a great wine from Alfred Tesseron for the vintage, I would start, broaching bottles now but keep a stash back for 4-5 years' time when those tannins have softened. Tasted February 2016.

Château Pontet-Canet 2004

The 2004 Château Pontet-Canet is an excellent example of the quality and elegance this year in Bordeaux has produced. The 2004 vintage is often praised for its balance and structure, and this wine showcases the fine craftsmanship of the Pontet-Canet winery.

In the glass, the 2004 vintage presents itself in a deep, dark ruby red, which indicates the wine's youth and freshness. The bouquet is complex and layered, with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, and cherries. These fruit notes are accompanied by elegant nuances of cedarwood, tobacco, and spices such as pepper and vanilla. Over time, subtle hints of leather, truffles, and a fine mineral note develop, lending the wine additional depth and complexity.

On the palate, the Château Pontet-Canet 2004 reveals itself with excellent structure and a well-integrated tannin framework. The fruit is fresh and clear, supported by a lively acidity that gives the wine a pleasant freshness and dynamism. The aromas of dark berries and spices are well-harmonized and complemented by delicate nuances of chocolate, toasted wood, and a subtle mineral note.

The finish is long and elegant, with a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, spices, and a subtle mineral note that gives the wine a smooth and persistent finish. The 2004 is already excellent to drink and displays much of the balance and complexity typical of this vintage, but also has the potential for further development to reveal even more nuances.

This wine pairs perfectly with classic Bordeaux dishes such as beef fillet, lamb, or game, as well as with aged cheeses. The Château Pontet-Canet 2004 is an excellent example of the high quality and elegant characteristics of Bordeaux wines from this vintage, offering a flavorful and sophisticated wine experience.
