Parker about Château Sanctus 2005
From a special 7.5 acre parcel culled from the Bienfaisance vineyard, this 1,000-case cuvee is dominated by its Merlot component (the blend also includes some Cabernet Franc). As are most of St.-Emilion's garigiste wines, it is given a Burgundian-like treatment of pre-fermentation cold maceration, malolactic in barrel, aging on its lees, and little clarification, all designed to accentuate the terroir, and enhance the wine's texture and perfume. The stunningly perfumed 2005 offers up notions of toast, black cherry jam, blackberries, espresso roast, white chocolate, and juicy meat. It is full-bodied as well as opulent for the vintage, with a gorgeous texture, and a long, 35+ second finish. Consume it over the next 15 or more years.

Château Sanctus 2005

The 2005 Château Sanctus from Saint-Émilion Grand Cru comes from one of the finest Bordeaux vintages in recent memory and demonstrates a remarkable balance between power, elegance, and longevity. This wine embodies the depth and complexity typical of the region and benefits from the exceptional quality of the 2005 vintage.
In the glass, the wine displays an intense, deep ruby red with a violet shimmer, indicating its concentration and youthfulness. On the nose, the 2005 Château Sanctus presents itself richly and complexly. Dark fruits such as blackberries, black cherries, and plums dominate, accompanied by spicy notes such as cinnamon, cloves, and a hint of vanilla. Subtle hints of cedarwood, tobacco, and mocha blend harmoniously into the overall picture, lending the bouquet additional complexity.
On the palate, the wine unfolds powerfully and structured, with dense, ripe tannins and a wonderfully balanced acidity that lends it freshness and vibrancy. The ripe, juicy fruit flavors are complemented by subtle spices and a fine mineral note. The influence of the oak barrels is present but well integrated, giving the wine an elegant toasted note and a creamy texture.
The finish is long and persistent, characterized by dark fruits, chocolate, and a delicate spice that lingers on the palate. The Château Sanctus 2005 has great aging potential and will continue to develop over the coming years, but can also be enjoyed now after sufficient decanting. Ideal with lamb, beef, or game dishes, as well as mature cheeses.
