Parker about Château Sociando-Mallet 2001
This Haut-Medoc performed spectacularly on the two occasions I tasted it from bottle, even eclipsing its impressive showing from cask. It looks to be every bit as powerful as the 2000... not an easy achievement. A fabulous sleeper of the vintage, it tastes more like a first-growth than an unclassified offering. Its inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a spectacular bouquet of lead pencil shavings, ink, blackberries, cedar, and earth. Full-bodied, with terrific texture, fabulous concentration, and moderately high tannin, this massive, atypical 2001 must be tasted to be believed. A brilliant achievement!

Château Sociando-Mallet 2001

The 2001 Château Sociando-Mallet from the Haut-Médoc appellation is an outstanding example of the quality and character of the wines from this region. The 2001 vintage is known for its balanced structure and complexity, which is also reflected in this wine.
In the glass, the Château Sociando-Mallet 2001 presents a deep, intense ruby red, indicative of its maturity and concentration. The bouquet is complex and layered, with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, and plums. This is complemented by elegant notes of cedarwood, tobacco, and a hint of pepper. Subtle nuances of leather and a subtle mineral note contribute to the complexity of the aroma.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured, with dense yet supple tannins that are perfectly integrated. The fruit flavors are intense and concentrated, complemented by spicy and earthy notes. The acidity is well-integrated, giving the wine a balanced freshness and vibrancy. The use of oak is elegant and contributes to the complexity and depth without being overpowering.
The finish is long and persistent, with a beautiful aftertaste of ripe fruit, spices, and a hint of oak. The Château Sociando-Mallet 2001 has developed excellently and now offers an impressive drinking experience. It has a few more years of aging potential, but is already in excellent condition. Ideal with hearty meat dishes such as beef, lamb, or game, as well as mature cheeses.
