Parker about Château Sociando-Mallet 2002
A striking minerality, copious quantities of black currants and plums, along with some dried herbs jump from the glass of this tannic, structured, somewhat severe but large-scaled, muscular wine that oozes testosterone. Virile, structured, and perhaps too tannic for its own good, but impressively built, pure, and a wine to admire (rather than possibly enjoy), this large-scaled 2002 requires 7-10 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+?. One of the cru bourgeois estates that always performs at classified growth quality levels, Sociando Mallet has, for 20 years, been the insider's choice for top quality wine that will easily withstand two decades of cellaring. Bottles from the 1970, 1975, and 1982 from my cellar are still youthful and evolving!

Château Sociando-Mallet 2002

The 2002 Château Sociando-Mallet from the Haut-Médoc appellation is an outstanding example of the quality achieved in this vintage. The 2002 vintage is often praised for its balanced structure and elegance, and the Sociando-Mallet is no exception.
In the glass, the Château Sociando-Mallet 2002 presents a deep, rich ruby red with a hint of garnet, indicating advanced maturity. The bouquet opens with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, and plums, accompanied by delicate notes of cedarwood, tobacco, and pepper. Nuances of leather, graphite, and a subtle minerality lend the wine additional depth and complexity.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured, with dense yet supple tannins that provide remarkable texture and length. The fruit flavors are intense and concentrated, complemented by complex spicy and earthy notes. The acidity is well-integrated, providing beautiful balance and freshness, and the oak is elegantly and harmoniously integrated.
The finish is long and persistent, with an elegant aftertaste of ripe fruit, spices, and a subtle hint of oak. The Château Sociando-Mallet 2002 has developed superbly and offers an impressive drinking experience, enjoying an excellent drinking window now but also capable of aging for several more years. It pairs perfectly with hearty meat dishes such as beef, lamb, or game, as well as with mature cheeses.
