Gigondas Vielles Vignes 1998

The 1998 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes from Tardieu-Laurent is a prime example of the impressive longevity and depth that old vines from this prestigious appellation can produce. The color is a dense ruby red with garnet highlights, reflecting over two decades of aging. The nose unfolds with a complex and intense bouquet of dried dark fruits such as black cherries, plums, and figs, accompanied by garrigue herbs, black pepper, and a subtle smoky note. With some aeration, complex tertiary aromas of leather, tobacco, truffle, and damp forest floor emerge, lending the wine additional depth.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet smooth, with beautifully integrated tannins that lend it structure and presence despite its age. The acidity is lively and perfectly balances the rich, spicy fruit. Aromas of dried herbs, licorice, graphite, and roasted nuts accompany the long, mineral-driven finish, which concludes with subtle hints of sweet spices and dark chocolate.
A magnificent, mature Gigondas that is now at its peak but will continue to shine at this level for several more years. An impressive example of how much finesse and depth a Gigondas can develop with proper vinification and patience.
