Parker about L'Ermita 1994
For L'Ermita, the 1994 is the current vintage in the marketplace; quantities are absurdly small. The color is a saturated inky/purple, and the soaring nose provides thrilling levels of sweet blackberry and cherry liqueur-like fruit. In spite of being full-bodied, massive, and huge, it manages to not taste heavy despite its gargantuan proportions of fruit, glycerin, tannin, and extract. This chewy, glycerin-imbued, phenomenally intense wines possesses all the component parts necessary to become a modern-day legend. This wine is a sexy, exotic wine that could be called Spanish Pomerol. The 1995 Crianza (14.6% alcohol) presents a saturated plum color, followed by a knock-out nose of melted chocolate and blackberry fruit, a lush, voluptuous texture, low acidity, and gobs of glycerin and fruit. This hedonistic wine is ideal for drinking over the next decade.

L'Ermita 1994

L'Ermita 1994 by Álvaro Palacios is a highly prestigious and exclusive wine from Priorat, one of Spain's finest wine regions. Álvaro Palacios, a visionary winemaker, has earned an international reputation through his innovative approach and his ability to produce wines with exceptional depth and elegance. L'Ermita is Álvaro Palacios' flagship wine project and is considered one of Spain's finest wines.
Made from a careful selection of old Garnacha (Grenache) grapes from vineyards on the steep, chalky slopes of the Priorat region, this wine was produced in small batches and is now a sought-after collector's item. The 1994 vintage was harvested and vinified under optimal conditions, with Álvaro Palacios applying his philosophy of minimal intervention in the cellar to preserve the terroir and the pure fruit of the wine.
In the glass, the L'Ermita 1994 displays a deep red, almost purple color, reflecting its intense concentration and maturity. The bouquet is extremely complex, with aromas of ripe red fruits such as cherries, raspberries, and plums blending with spicy and mineral notes. The wine also reveals subtle hints of herbs, vanilla, cedarwood, and a light smokiness, brought about by the oak barrel aging.
On the palate, L'Ermita 1994 is full of power and elegance, with intense fruit flavors that blend harmoniously with spicy and earthy notes. The tannins are perfectly integrated, and the acidity lends the wine a beautiful freshness that makes it balanced and lively. The finish is long and persistent, with a fascinating mineral aftertaste and a subtle smokiness.
