Parker about Barbaresco 1996
The 1996 Barbaresco exhibits a dense ruby color as well as a forward nose of cherry liqueur, earth, truffle, mineral, and spicy scents. Rich, full-bodied, and seductive, with its moderate tannin largely concealed by the wine's wealth of fruit and extract, this gorgeously pure offering gets my nod as the finest Barbaresco produced by Gaja since 1990.

Barbaresco 1996

Angelo Gaja's 1996 Barbaresco is an outstanding example of this legendary winemaker's craftsmanship and the high quality of the Nebbiolo grape from the Piedmont region. The nose unfolds with an intense bouquet featuring aromas of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, as well as a variety of complex floral and spicy notes. Aromas of rose petals, herbs, spices, and hints of tobacco and cedarwood add additional depth and complexity to the wine.
On the palate, the 1996 Barbaresco displays remarkable structure with well-integrated tannins that have softened over time. Lively acidity provides freshness and balance, while aromas of ripe fruit, spices, and a subtle minerality characterize the flavor profile. The finish is long and complex, with an elegant aftertaste of tobacco and earthy notes.
This vintage has developed superbly and offers a captivating drinking experience that reflects the complexity and elegance of a great Barbaresco. The 1996 Gaja is a masterpiece with further aging potential, offering lovers of mature wines an exceptional experience.
Angelo Gaja
Information about the winemaker:
The family winery is now one of the best known in Italy and can look back on a centuries-old history. The success story of owner Angelo Gaja began in the 17th century when the family emigrated from Spain to Italy. In 1859, a member of the family, a grape producer in Barbaresco, laid the foundation for the current company by opening a tavern, which also served their own wines. The wines were already so popular at the end of the 19th century that they were supplied to the Italian army, among others. Already in the second generation of the family, an unusually high value was placed on quality, with the aim of retaining a predominantly upscale clientele.
