Parker about Château Haut-Brion 1988
This is one of the better bottles of Haut-Brion '88s that I have had. A deep garnet hue with a deep brick rim. The nose is austere and conservative with cedar, pine, leather and cigar box but good definition and vigour. The palate displays fresh acidity, an austere, slightly lean character with a firmness creeping towards the finish. Great purity though, but just lacking something in the middle.

The 1988 Château Haut-Brion is an exceptional wine from one of the world's most famous wineries, Château Haut-Brion, located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation in the Graves wine region of Bordeaux. The 1988 vintage is prized for its classic structure and ability to age for decades.
The Château Haut-Brion 1988 is a deep ruby red with hints of brick red, indicating its maturity and long ageing. A complex and nuanced bouquet unfolds on the nose. Initially, aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, and plums dominate, accompanied by subtle notes of cedarwood, tobacco, and leather. With increasing aeration, further aromas of truffle, graphite, and a hint of spice emerge, lending the bouquet additional depth and complexity.
On the palate, the Château Haut-Brion 1988 reveals itself as a wine of impressive structure and elegance. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, resulting in a velvety and harmonious mouthfeel. The intense fruit aromas continue, complemented by secondary notes of dried herbs, mineral tones, and a light smoky note. The acidity is lively, lending the wine freshness and balance, supporting its longevity.
The finish is long and persistent, characterized by a harmonious blend of fruit, oak, and tertiary aromas that fade slowly and leave a lasting impression. This wine displays remarkable complexity and depth, typical of Château Haut-Brion and underscoring its high quality.
