Parker about Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1983
This was the first vintage made under the administration of Jean Delmas. The most notable and dramatic change made at La Mission-Haut-Brion since 1983 became a more refined, polished, sophisticated style without the pure mass of older vintages, but also without the excesses of tannin and volatile acidity that sometimes plagued ancient vintages. The 1983, a very good vintage in the southern Medoc and Graves, is a relatively lightweight La Mission (particularly compared to the 1982) that is fully mature. Complex notes of smoked herbs, cigar tobacco, black currants, sweet cherries, damp earth and spice box jump from the glass of this dark garnet-colored wine. Medium-bodied with silky tannins, well-integrated, low acidity and abundant perfume, this fully mature 1983 should be consumed over the next decade.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1983

The 1983 Château La Mission Haut-Brion is an outstanding wine from the renowned Château La Mission Haut-Brion estate, located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation in the Graves wine region of Bordeaux. This vintage has received special recognition for its optimal ripening conditions and meticulous vinification.
The wine is a deep ruby red with light brick-red reflections, indicating its maturity and development. A complex and seductive bouquet unfolds on the nose. Initially, aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, and plums dominate. These fruit notes are complemented by deeper, secondary aromas of leather, tobacco, and toasted oak, developed from the long aging in barriques. A hint of graphite and truffle adds additional depth and complexity to the bouquet.
On the palate, the Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1983 reveals itself as a powerful yet elegant wine. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, resulting in a smooth and velvety texture. The dense fruitiness perceived on the nose continues, enhanced by spicy and earthy notes. Additional layers of licorice, roasted nuts, and a hint of chocolate develop, underscoring the wine's complexity.
The lively acidity gives the wine freshness and structure, supporting its longevity. The finish is remarkably long and complex, with an elegant balance of fruit, oak, and tertiary flavors that slowly fade, leaving a lasting impression.
