Parker about Château Sociando-Mallet 1989

Once again this estate revealed its excellent quality/price ratio. As one taster so appropriately stated after learning the identity of both the 1989 and 1990 Sociando-Mallets, "I'd rather have the '89 or '90 Sociando-Mallet than the '89 Margaux or '90 Mouton in my cellar." Both wines showed surprisingly well, performing at second or third-growth levels. The 1989 reveals a youthful, unevolved purple color, followed by a sweet nose of black fruits, minerals, and vanillin. The wine is extremely young (much more so than most 1989s), with medium to full body, good tannin, and not nearly as much of the vintage's soft, evolved personality in evidence. Dense, rich, and concentrated, this wine needs another 4-5 years of cellaring; it should keep for 20+ years.

Château Sociando-Mallet 1989

The Château Sociando-Mallet 1989 is a remarkable Bordeaux wine from the Haut-Médoc appellation, known for its high-quality wines. The Sociando-Mallet winery enjoys a high reputation for producing wines that are often considered insider tips among Bordeaux lovers, offering outstanding quality while remaining less well-known than the region's big names.

The 1989 vintage was excellent for Bordeaux overall, and the Château Sociando-Mallet 1989 reflects the excellent conditions of that year. The wine displays a deep ruby red color with slight signs of ripeness at the edges. The nose unfolds with a complex bouquet, revealing intense aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, and plums, accompanied by subtle notes of tobacco, cedarwood, and a hint of earth. Over time, additional nuances of spice, leather, and a fine minerality develop in the glass, adding further complexity to the bouquet.

On the palate, the Château Sociando-Mallet 1989 is powerful and well-structured. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated, giving the wine a firm structure yet a pleasant smoothness. The acidity is lively and well-balanced, lending the wine freshness and longevity. The fruit flavors continue, complemented by layers of mocha, chocolate, and a subtle spice. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering dark fruit flavors and a subtle smoky note.
