Parker about Échézeaux Grand Cru 1988
I do not think I have ever tasted a better example of Echezeaux, a wine that is usually their lightest and quickest to mature. In 1988, it is bursting with rich, concentrated, berry fruit, has the exotic, oriental spice character that often marks the wines from this domaine, and is sensationally long and full. Even though it is the most forward wine from the domaine, I would wait at least 5 years before drinking this beauty. I feel it has the requisite depth, concentration, power, and tannin to last two decades.

Échézeaux Grand Cru 1988

The Échézeaux Grand Cru 1988 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti presents a deep garnet red color with brick-red reflections, indicating the wine's maturity. The nose unfolds a complex and seductive bouquet of ripe red and dark fruits such as cherries, raspberries, and plums, accompanied by floral notes such as violets and a hint of rose petals. Spicy accents such as cinnamon, cloves, and a hint of vanilla, as well as earthy nuances of undergrowth and mushrooms, lend the wine additional depth and complexity. On the palate, the wine is silky and elegant, with a fine tannin structure and lively acidity that lends freshness and balance to the fruit flavors. The ripe fruit aromas are complemented by discreet oak notes and a subtle minerality. The finish is long and complex, with a lingering impression of spice and a perfect harmony between fruit, acidity, and tannin. This Grand Cru from the 1988 vintage is an outstanding example of the masterful viticulture of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which produces wines of exceptional finesse and complexity.
