Parker about Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 1999
One of the undeniable stars of the vintage, the 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve is a blockbuster in a year that did not generally produce wines of such power and richness (of course, it includes the declassified Vieilles Vignes cuvee in the blend). A deep purple color is followed by aromas of cassis, kirsch liqueur, flowers, plums, and blackberries. Full-bodied, multi-layered, and fabulously extracted, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and magnificent purity, this is a sumptuous, prodigious Chateauneuf du Pape that should drink well for 15-20 years. It is hard to believe that something this special could have been produced in 1999, but there are a half dozen or so wines at this level in 1999.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 1999

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réservé 1999 from Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is a striking example of the longevity and depth of great Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. The color is a deep ruby red with a slightly lightened rim, reflecting its ripeness, while the nose immediately impresses with intense aromas of dark cherries, dried plums, and cassis. These are joined by complex notes of garrigue, black pepper, dried meat, and hints of truffle, underscoring the tertiary development of this exceptional wine. The palate displays exceptional density and fullness, perfectly balanced by lively acidity. The tannins are supple but still present, giving the wine impressive structure. Aromas of dark fruits, licorice, graphite, and delicate spice linger in the mouth, while the finish concludes with a mineral note and nuances of tobacco and leather. A wine with enormous depth and elegance that has reached its peak but still offers further development potential.
