Parker about Château Latour Grand Vin 1988
The best showing yet for a wine from this under-rated vintage, the dark garnet-colored 1988 Latour reveals slight amber at the edge. A bouquet of melted tar, plums, black currants, cedar, and underbrush is followed by a sweet entry, with medium to full body, excellent ripeness, and mature tannin. It is a classic, elegant Latour with more meaty, vegetable-like flavors than were found in a riper year, such as 1989 and 1990. The 1988 has just begun to enter its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for 25 years.

Château Latour Grand Vin 1988

The Château Latour Grand Vin 1988 is a remarkable Bordeaux wine from the renowned Château Latour estate in the Pauillac appellation. The 1988 vintage is considered a solid, but not a top-notch vintage.
The Château Latour Grand Vin 1988 is a deep ruby red with garnet reflections, indicating its maturity and development. On the nose, it presents complex aromas of dark fruits such as blackcurrants, blackberries, and cassis, accompanied by subtle notes of cedarwood, tobacco, and a hint of spice. These aromas are harmonious overall and demonstrate a certain maturity from ageing.
On the palate, the Château Latour Grand Vin 1988 offers a powerful structure with firm and well-integrated tannins. The fruity aromas continue on the palate, accompanied by further nuances of dark chocolate, roasted notes, and a light mineral component. The acidity is lively, lending the wine freshness and balance.
The finish is long and persistent, with a harmonious balance between fruit, tannins and the complex aromas that slowly fade away, leaving a lasting memory.
