Parker about Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse De Lalande 1996
The 1996 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is really beginning to drink with style, wafting from the glass with an inviting nose of blackberries, cassis, cherries, rich soil tones, Cuban cigar and subtle hints of mint and bergamot. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with an expansive, sumptuous core of fruit that's underpinned by ripe acids and ripe, powdery virile tannins, it concludes with a long, penetrating and sapid finish. This unusually Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated vintage was tightly wound for its first two decades, but as time passes it's the château signature that's dominating the cépagement. It's one of the wines of the vintage in 1996.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse De Lalande 1996

The 1996 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is an outstanding wine from one of the most respected wineries in the Pauillac appellation in Bordeaux. This vintage is considered one of the best of the 1990s, particularly for the wines of the Left Bank of the Gironde, where Pauillac is located. The winery, often referred to simply as "Pichon Comtesse," is known for its elegant and feminine wines characterized by finesse and complexity.
The 1996 vintage benefited from exceptional weather conditions, which led to long and even ripening of the grapes. This enabled the wine to achieve exceptional concentration and balance. The 1996 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande consists predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small proportion of Petit Verdot, which gives the wine its characteristic structure and elegance.
The wine is a deep, dense ruby red in color. The aroma is complex and seductive, with notes of black currants, plums, cedarwood, tobacco, and a hint of violet. With age, tertiary aromas such as leather, earth, and spices develop in the bouquet, lending the wine additional depth. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet elegant, with a silky texture and fine, ripe tannins. The fruit flavors are accompanied by a mineral freshness typical of Pauillac, as well as a subtle spiciness that unfolds in the long, lingering finish.
