Parker about Peter 1998

First tasted at the MW vertical with Christian Moueix. Very deep ruby colour. A profound nose of black fruits, quite masculine with hints of black truffle. Turning mocha with aeration. Very complex. The palate is perfect. Incredible concentration and balance. Perfect acidity. Dense black fruits laced with black pepper. Less showy than the 2000, this is a more intellectual wine. Backward, broody with the length of a Lord of the Rings trilogy. A behemoth that will become a benchmark Peter. Then at the FWE vertical in October 2005. An incredible broody nose of powerful blackberry, cassis and a touch of gun smoke with that black truffle scent developing with aeration. The palate is lithic, sweet, focused, powerful and very complex. A little more weight than the 2000, although it has been closed down since last year. More masculine, a long-term Peter that reminds me of the 1989. Will be legendary.

Suckling over Peter 1998

Stunning. So deep and characterful yet refined and subtle. It shows aromas of wet earth, mushrooms and dark fruits. Dry black olives come out as well. Full body, firm tannins and bright acidity. Very fresh and just opening up now. Walnut and chocolate characters. So youthful. Decant two or three hours before serving.

Produktbeschreibung

Peter 1998

The 1998 Pétrus is considered one of the most outstanding vintages from this legendary Pomerol winery. This vintage was particularly favorable for the Merlot grape, which ripened perfectly in Pétrus' clay-rich terroir. The 1998 Pétrus is one of the icons of Bordeaux and is known for its exceptional concentration and longevity.

The wine has a dense, deep red color that shows hardly any signs of aging. The nose unfolds with intense, complex aromas of black fruits such as blackberry and ripe plum, accompanied by notes of truffle, cedarwood, graphite, and delicate spices. On the palate, the Pétrus 1998 is exceptionally rich yet harmonious, with a silky, almost velvety texture. The powerful, perfectly integrated tannins give the wine a remarkable structure, making it ideal for long aging. The fruitiness is complemented by mineral nuances and precise acidity, ensuring excellent balance.

The finish is impressively long and complex, leaving a lingering impression of ripe berries, delicate spice, and a subtle earthy note. The Pétrus 1998 is at the peak of its drinking maturity, but with optimal storage, it can continue to age for many years, if not decades. It is a perfect accompaniment to fine dishes such as truffle dishes or lamb rump, or simply enjoyed to fully appreciate its exceptional complexity.
