Parker about Wawener Goldberg Riesling Spätlese 2023
The 2023 Goldberg Spätlese is from red slate with limestone of the Paris basin in the underground. The wine offers ripe and intense fruit intermingled with lemon, weathered red slate and some iodine aromas. Full-bodied, intense and very mineral on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, intense and persistent yet also refined and crystalline Riesling with a long, complex, even powerful finish. Still very young but very promising, it is persistently saline and mouthwatering. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

Wawener Goldberg Riesling Spätlese 2023

The Wawener Goldberg Riesling Spätlese 2023 from Van Volxem comes from the prestigious Wawener Goldberg vineyard on the Saar River. This site is known for its steep slopes and barren slate soils, which impart a unique minerality to the wine. The 2023 vintage delivers ripe aromas of exotic fruits such as mango and pineapple, complemented by notes of citrus and a hint of honey. This Spätlese impresses with its perfect balance between lively acidity and an elegant, natural sweetness, typical of this Prädikatwein. On the palate, the wine is complex and multi-layered, with a clear fruit note and a long, harmonious finish. This Spätlese pairs perfectly with spicy dishes, Asian cuisine, or desserts, and also offers a special treat on its own. With this wine, Van Volxem remains true to its philosophy of expressing the Saar terroir in the finest way.
