Parker about Château Pavie 1998

The 1998 Pavie is deep garnet-brick in color. So much fruit comes charging out of the gate here: profound crème de cassis, baked blackberries and blackberry preserves with notions of beef dripping, crushed rocks, unsmoked cigar, sandalwood and dried lavender. Big, rich and beautifully impactful, it is completely packed with taut, muscular black and blue fruit preserves, maintaining nice firm grainy tannins with layer after layer of exotic spices, meat and earth notions, finishing epically long and minerally. Should easily continue to cellar for 25+ years.

Château Pavie 1998

The 1998 Château Pavie is an outstanding wine from a vintage considered particularly successful in Saint-Émilion. This wine embodies the lush fruit and opulent structure that have always characterized Château Pavie and impressively demonstrates the potential of this renowned terroir.

In the glass, the Pavie 1998 presents a dense, deep ruby red with garnet reflections, indicating its incipient maturity. The bouquet is seductive and complex, characterized by intense aromas of ripe black cherries, blackberries, and plums. These fruity notes are accompanied by a luxurious layer of spices such as cinnamon and cloves. Additional hints of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and fine tobacco emerge, lending the wine depth and elegance.

On the palate, the Château Pavie 1998 is full-bodied and powerful, with a dense and velvety texture. The fruit flavors are rich and concentrated, supported by lively acidity and robust yet supple tannins. This structure gives the wine impressive length and richness, while the tannins provide a certain freshness and longevity. In the mouth, the aromas of dark fruits unfold, accompanied by notes of licorice, leather, and a hint of earth, lending the wine a fascinating complexity and depth.

The finish is long, intense, and complex, with a lingering aroma of ripe fruit, spice, and a subtle mineral note. The 1998 Château Pavie demonstrates a wonderful balance between power and finesse and has many years of aging ahead of it, during which it will continue to develop.

This wine is an ideal accompaniment to rich dishes such as rack of lamb, game, or aged cheeses. It offers a profound and complex drinking experience and embodies the excellent quality and distinctive style of Château Pavie.

Information about the winemaker:

The history of this winery dates back to Roman times, and it's fascinating to consider how many generations of winemakers have shaped this heritage. In the 19th century, the château experienced a rebirth under the leadership of Ferdinand Bouffard, who transformed it into a respected winemaking center. However, it was the Perse family, who took over the property in the 1950s, who initiated a remarkable transformation that led it to its current glory.
